Things You'll Need
Instructions
Remove all non-Sony peripherals and accessories and try loading games with only a single Sony-brand control pad and PS2 Memory Card plugged into the system. Many third-party controllers and memory cards contain unauthorized hardware that can prevent games from running correctly.
Move the console to a dry, cool, well-ventilated area free from dust or direct sunlight. Make sure the ventilation panels on the front, sides and rear of the system have an inch or more of free space through which to intake and expel air. Your console's laser and chipset can temporarily fail if the machine's cooling apparatus is obstructed.
Clean the ventilation panels with a vacuum cleaner set to "Low" or a new clean, dry toothbrush. Remove all dust and lint so the machine's inner workings are visible through the panels.
Turn the machine on and insert a DVD lens-cleaning disc. Allow the disc to run its cycle by paying attention to the disc's onscreen or oral prompts. Alternatively, if you have a PS2 Slim model machine, open the disc tray and manually clean the round laser head by rubbing lightly with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol.
Clean all games to ensure they do not contain dirt that could obstruct or damage the PlayStation 2's laser. Use a clean, lint-free cloth damp with rubbing alcohol. Rub in straight lines from the middle to outside of the disc, never in circular motions.
