Clean Inside the Console
Unplug the Sony Playstation 2 from all electrical outlets and remove all cords attached to the system.
Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the eight screws from the back of the console.
Carefully remove the console's plastic cover. There will be a disc assembly located on the right side of the system.
Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws on the disc assembly cover and carefully remove the top.
Inspect the system for large build-ups of foreign objects, dirt and debris.
Use the can of compressed air to blow away the dust and debris and use tweezers to carefully remove any large dust bunnies and foreign objects such as hair.
Replace the disc assembly cover and the console's outer shell.
Clean the Disc
Remove the malfunctioning disc from the console and inspect it for deep scratches. If a disc is heavily scratched, it will not play regardless of what you do.
Spray the disc with CD-Rom cleaner.
Take the soft lens cloth and clean away any fingerprints or smudges found on the disc. Wipe in a smooth, straight motion from the center of the disc to the outside edges. DO NOT rub continuously in one spot or in a circular motion, as that can further damage the disc.
Place the disc back in the console and attempt to play.
