How to Repair a Read Error for a PlayStation 2 Memory Card

The Sony Playstation 2 is a gaming system that allows the user to save game data and game progress to removable memory cards. This allows you to access your character, game progress and game data later on or on another Playstation 2 console. Over time, dust can settle into the crevices between the memory card and the connection. Improper placement of the memory card can also lead to "read errors" requiring troubleshooting.

Things You'll Need

  • Can of compressed air (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Playstation by pushing the green power button on the front of the system. Turn off the main power switch on the rear above the cooling fans.

    • 2

Remove the memory card from the slot. Position the canned air nozzle upright directly in front of the memory card slots on the Playstation.

    • 3

Use the paperclip to hold open the hinged flap covering each slot and spray the air into the slots. Be careful not to jam the paperclip into the slot.

    • 4

Hold the memory card in your hand with the opening facing you. Hold the canned air upright and spray into the opening.

    • 5

Be sure the top of the memory card is facing upward. The top features the "Sony" and "Playstation" logo and includes the memory card size information.

    • 6

Firmly push the memory card back into the first player memory card slot with the top facing up. Use your thumb to push the card in place.

    • 7

Turn on the main power switch on the rear of the Playstation and push the front power button. Wait for the loading screen to appear. The memory card should appear on screen. If it does not, proceed to Step 8.

    • 8

Remove the memory card from the first player card slot and insert it into the second player slot. Make sure a Playstation controller is connected to the second player controller slot. Restart the Playstation and wait for the loading screen to appear showing the memory card.
