Opening the Chassis
Flip the Playstation over so that it's upside down. Note the six screw covers on the bottom. One of the screws is under the warranty seal. Remove the warranty seal sticker.
Remove the six screw covers on the bottom of the unit. Use the screwdriver or thin blade to pry them out and set them aside.
Unscrew the six chassis screws with the Phillips screwdriver. Flip the unit so the back of the unit is upright.
Carefully pry the large black sticker next to the network port from the frame. Flip the unit upright.
Gently and carefully pull the top of the chassis away from the bottom.
Removing the DVD drive unit
Unscrew the four large flat-headed screws in each corner of the drive. Set them aside carefully.
Remove the three ribbon cables connecting the outer side of the drive unit to the main board below. Pull the smallest straight up and out. For the mid-size cable, pull up slightly on the clip holding it to release the cable. For the largest cable, use your screwdriver or blade to pull open the clip. The largest ribbon cable is also secured to metal plate below the drive unit. Pry it up carefully.
Lift the drive unit up and away once all ribbon cables are released.
Cooling Fan
Unscrew the three small screws in the corners of the fan assembly.
Pull the wire connecting the fan to the main board straight up to release the plug.
Lift the disconnected fan assembly up and away.
