Check that all plugs and leads are connected securely. Many PS2 Slim problems stem from a loose connection. There are five connections to check: the power and RF leads in the back of the console, the RF connection to your television or VCR's "Video In" port, the power lead's connection to the black adapter box, and the adapter's connection to mains power. Unplug and reconnect all these connections to ensure that they are fastened firmly.
Connect your PS2 Slim directly to your television. Most picture errors such as fuzzy image, flickering colors or rolling picture occur when the PS2 Slim is connected through a VCR, DVD player or video receiver. To check whether your player or receiver is degrading the picture signal, try connecting the machine directly to the "Video In" port of your television. If this fixes the error, reconfigure your video setup to leave your PS2 Slim connected directly to the television.
Clean the laser of your PS2 Slim. One of the console's biggest advantages over the original PlayStation 2 is the ability to clean the laser without expensive cleaning products. Disconnect the machine from mains power and open the disc door. Dab rubbing alcohol onto a Q-tip and gently wipe the round white laser, which can be clearly identified sitting in the machine's disc tray. Wait for the alcohol to dry off the laser before reconnecting power.
Ensure that the console is in a cool, dry place free from dust. If the PS2 Slim is in direct sunlight or an area with excessive heat or dust, the machine's internal components may temporarily malfunction or be permanently damaged. Use a clean toothbrush to clean dust from the machine's vents, located on the lower edge of the sides and back of the machine, and reposition the machine in a spot free from dust or direct sunlight, ensuring the machine's vents are not blocked.
Try a different game or DVD in your console. If one particular disc is refusing to load or is not playing correctly, test other PS1, PS2 or DVD discs in the machine to ascertain whether the fault lies with the disc or the console.
