How to Mod a PS2 Without a Chip

The PlayStation 2 Slim (PS2 Slim) shares a common problem with any device using a DVD drive--the disc being played can become scratched and cease to function. You can make copies of your game discs using a computer but they will not play on the game console unless it has been modified first. You will have to open the PS2 Slim, voiding the Sony warranty, but no modification (or ̶0;mod̶1;) chip must be installed because you will be using a PS2 Boot disc purchased from a video game store.

Things You'll Need

PS2 Boot disc
Torx screwdriver
Flat-edged screwdriver
Duct tape
PS2 game disc copy

Instructions

  Put the PS2 Slim down on a table. Raise the lid of the PS2 Slim.

  Push down on the plastic latch at the front rightmost edge of the PS2 Slim. Tape over the plastic latch with duct tape.

  Close the lid of the PS2 Slim. Turn the PS22 over.

  Scratch off the two warranty stickers on the bottom of the PS2 Slim with the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver.

  Pull the rubber feet off of the bottom of the PS2 Slim with the flat-edged screwdriver.

  Remove the screws now exposed by having scratched off the warranty stickers and removing the rubber feet with the Torx screwdriver. Turn the PS2 Slim face up on the table.

  Lift the outer case off the PS2 with your hands. Put the outer case aside.

  Push down on the small plastic button to the right of the disc spindle on the disc drive motor at the center of the PS2 Slim. Tape over the small plastic button with duct tape.

  Put the outer case back onto the PS2 Slim. Turn the PS2 Slim over. Reattach the screws. Turn the PS2 over. Reattach the cables.

  Raise the lid of the PS2 Slim. Put the PS2 Boot disc onto the disc spindle. Turn the PS2 Slim on.

  Wait for the menu to appear on the screen. Select ̶0;Load Program̶1; from the menu using the direction pad of the game controller.

  Wait for the menu to appear on the screen and the PS2 Boot disc to stop spinning.

  Select ̶0;Load Program̶1; from the menu using the direction pad of the game controller.

  Pull the PS2 Boot disc off the disc spindle. Put the PS2 game disc copy onto the disc spindle.

  Press ̶0;X̶1; on the game controller. The PS2 Slim will now read the PS2 game disc copy and load the game so it can be played.
