How to Install a Hard Drive on a Slim PS2

The PlayStation 2 (PS2) Slim is a functionally similar, but smaller-sized version of, the first-generation video game console. The PS2 Slim does not have a slot for adding a hard drive as the first generation does. Add a hard drive to the PS2 Slim by replacing the bottom case with one that has circuitry built in for this purpose, along with space to hold the hard drive. Soldering is required, so familiarity with a soldering iron is necessary. Adding a hard drive to the PS2 Slim will also void the Sony warranty.

  • FPC-8 FPC cable
  • FPC-T FPC cable

Instructions

    • 1

Put a soft cloth on a table. Remove all of the cables from the PS2 Slim. Put the PS2 Slim face down on the soft cloth.

    • 2

Lift off the rubber feet using the tip of the utility knife. Scratch off the sticker with the tip of the utility knife.

    • 3

Remove the screws from beneath the rubber feet and from beneath the sticker with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the exposed screws from the the bottom with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 4

Pull the bottom off the PS2 with an upward motion. Put the bottom aside.

    • 5

Remove the screw in the metal bracket by the game controller ports with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Lift the motherboard off the plastic shell. Put the motherboard face up on the soft cloth with the fan assembly at the bottom left corner.

    • 6

Place the FPC-8 FPC cable at the upper right corner of the motherboard so that it forms an "L" shape. Solder the top vertical end of the FPC-8 FPC cable to the PS2 main board-labeled contact at the upper right corner. Let the solder cool for a minute.

    • 7

Place the FPC-T FPC cable over the FPC-8 FPC cable at the top right corner of the motherboard so that it forms a "L." Solder the top vertical end of the FPC-T FPC cable to the data-labeled contact to the left of the main board-labeled contact. Let the solder cool for a minute.

    • 8

Pull out the power plug from the side of the square power supply at the upper left of the motherboard. Insert the PS2 hard drive circuit board power plug into the now-vacant connector. Plug the power plug from the PS2 Slim into the open port of the PS2 hard drive circuit board power plug. Stretch the PS2 hard drive circuit board power plug over to the FPC cables.

    • 9

Place the PS2 hard drive circuit board on top of the two FPC cables, lining up the holes in the hard drive circuit board with the holes in the motherboard. Screw in the screws using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 10

Turn the motherboard over. Put the plastic shell back into position against the motherboard. Turn the motherboard and the plastic shell over. Put the metal bracket back onto the motherboard. Reattach the screw. Turn the motherboard face down on the soft cloth.

    • 11

Place the PS2 hard drive circuit board case on top of the motherboard, lining up the screws in the case and the motherboard. Screw in the screws using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 12

Turn the motherboard back face up. Insert the slots of the two FPC cables into the same-named connectors of the PS2 hard drive circuit board cable. Insert the PS2 hard drive circuit board cable into the side slot of the PS2 hard drive circuit board case.

    • 13

Reverse the disassembly to reassemble the PS2 Slim.

    • 14

Slide the hard drive into the hard drive tray. Attach the screws to both sides of the hard drive tray with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to secure the hard drive.

    • 15

Pull out the PS2 hard drive circuit board power plug and the PS2 hard drive circuit board cable out of the compartment in the side of the PS2 Slim.

    • 16

Plug the hard drive circuit board power plug into the power plug port of the hard drive. Plug the PS2 hard drive circuit board cable into the data connector of the hard drive.

    • 17

Push the hard drive tray into the compartment. Secure the tray into the compartment by attaching a screw with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Reattach the cables.
