Parts of a Playstation 2

The Sony PlayStation 2 was first released in 2000, one year ahead of comparable game consoles from Microsoft and Nintendo. It has continued to sell enough new units and encourage new games from developers that the manufacturer still considers it a viable video game console 10 years after its initial release. It is also the highest-selling game console of all time, a ranking it owes in no small part to its longevity within the console market.
  1. Power Supply

    • The external power adapter connects the PS2 to an AC power source, providing electricity to the internal electronics.

    Controller Inputs

    • There are two front inputs for Sony PS2 controllers, as well as two USB inputs and one IEEE 1394 (also known as FireWire or iLink) and a port on the back for the Online Adaptor.

    Audio and Video Output

    • The PlayStation 2 comes with a composite A/V cord for standard resolution graphics and audio quality. Additional ports accommodate S-video and component-video connectors for improved video quality and an optical digital audio jack for surround sound.

    External Memory Slot

    • The external memory port will accept PS2 memory cards, but it is incompatible with older Sony memory sticks, such as those used for the original PlayStation.

    Body and Casing

    • The PS2 shipped in two physical designs: the original and a much slimmer redesign. Both casings can operate either vertically or horizontally, and an adapter stand is sold with the PlayStation 2 to allow it to stand upright. Inside the body, a Toshiba & Sony Emotion Engine 294.9 MHz processor and 32 MB of integrated RAM provide the computing power to run PS2 games.

    DVD Drive

    • The DVD drive on the PS2 reads DVDs and compact discs containing DVD video, audio files or PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games.
