Items
Players can acquire extra items in Return to Arms. The Sword in the Stone is not available at the beginning of the game and must be unlocked. To get the Sword, players must first get all 11 Bloodstones and beat all five bosses in the Final Bonus Round. Doing this opens up a secret area in the Final Bonus Round where players battle a character named Innoruuk. Once Innoruuk is defeated, the Sword in the Stone is unlocked.
Players can also double their item inventory by taking advantage of a cheat. To double items, save the game and then begin a new one. When starting the new game, import the main character from the old one and release all items so that the new character can claim them. Players can do this multiple times to keep gaining items.
Secrets
Secret messages and characters can be found in Return to Arms. Players get a secret message that says "This is the last message! Do not forget to go to bed!" by defeating 80 warlords without losing a life in Warlord's Endless Hour. The Snowblind Penguin, a character that represents the studio that made Return to Arms, can be found by playing The Plane of Torment level and veering off toward a tower near the beginning of the level. The Snowblind Penguin is located on this tower.
Abilities
Special abilities can be used in Return to Arms to gain advantages. In multi-player mode, if any character uses the critical hit ability, then other players will also immediately have this ability. Players can also move at top speed with their shaman, regardless of his size. To do this, players must get giant growth for their shaman and then save their game. When the game is loaded again, the shaman will be regular size, but will maintain the speed of a giant. While playing as the Shadow Knight, players can kill a group of enemies and then revive them using the Raise Army. Doing this will automatically kill the opponents to start the next round, thus eliminating the work of doing so.
