Things You'll Need
Instructions
Remove the disc from the console and press the reset button or power it off. Then turn it back on and try the disc again.
Check the condition of the game disc. If the game disc is dirty, it could inhibit the PS2's laser from reading it, causing the disc read error. If the disc is dirty, gently wipe it clean using a soft, lint-free and nonabrasive cloth in straight lines from the center outward. Scratches also can lead to a disc read error. Make sure it's not overly damaged or try another game disc and see whether that works instead. The problem may be with the disc itself and not the console.
Check the disc to make sure it's compatible with your PS2. The PlayStation 2 is capable of playing PS2, PS2-DVD, DVD, CD and original PlayStation game discs.
Power on the PlayStation 2 with the disc tray open. Then press "Triangle," select console, press the "Triangle" button again and set the console to Diagnosis mode. Close the disc tray and start the game as normal.
Remove the disc from your PlayStation 2 and power off the console. Then reposition the console so it's vertical if it was originally horizontal or horizontal if it was originally vertical. Then try the game disc as normal. Sometimes repositioning the console makes it read easier.
Power off your PlayStation 2 and unplug the console. Using a can of compressed air, dust the console vents and laser lens (be gentle when dusting the lens, using short bursts of air several inches away from the lens).
Clean the PS2 laser lens. On older models with the automatic disc tray, use a cleaning disc. On Slim PS2 models, remove the disc from the PlayStation 2 and power off the console. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a cotton swab and rub gently in a circular motion for 10 seconds. Then dry it with the same method, using the opposite end of the cotton swab.
