How to Clean a PS2 Slim Lens

If your PlayStation 2 Slim is having trouble playing games and reporting a number of disc-read errors, it may be time to clean the system's laser lens. This is a small, circular lens located inside the disc tray. You can access the lens by opening the PS2 Slim's disc tray door, the same as if you were placing a game into the system. You can clean the lens without using an expensive cleaning kit; all that is required is a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.

Isopropyl alcohol

Instructions

  Activate the system's "stand-by" mode by holding the "Reset" button down until the light turns red.

  Unplug the PS2 Slim and detach any controllers and cables that might be attached to the system.

  Open the door to the disc tray and locate the small circular lens in the bottom of the tray.

  Dampen one tip of the cotton swab with the isopropyl alcohol and gently clean the surface of the laser lens.

  Reverse the cotton swab and use the other side to dry any excess alcohol on the lens.

  Repeat the process only if the lens is very dirty.

  Close the disc tray door and reattach the power cord, controllers and cables to your system.
