How to Fix a PS2 Disc Read Error Glitch

The Sony PlayStation 2 gaming system sometimes experiences what's known as ̶0;Disc Read Error̶1;. This is caused by one of two problems. The PS2 game disc may be dirty, preventing the system from reading it properly, or the PlayStation 2 optical reading lens is dirty and obstructed, preventing it from reading the game disc data properly. Both of these issues are easily remedied.

Things You'll Need

  • Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
  • Nonabrasive cloth or towel
  • Optical eye cleaning product

Instructions

    • 1

Isolate the problem by troubleshooting the error message. Do this by taking out the PS2 disc from the system and inserting another disc to see if the error persists. If the second disc plays without an error, the problem is probably with the first disc, which may be dirty.

    • 2

Apply several drops of isopropyl alcohol to a nonabrasive cloth and gently rub the data side (the silver side) of the disc, starting from the inside and moving toward the edges, removing dirt, smudges and fingerprint stains.

    • 3

Clean the PS2 optical lens with a lens-cleaning product if the disc read error is not caused by the disc. The problem may be a dirty and obstructed optical lens.

    • 4

Place the lens-cleaning product, which is similar to a regular PS2 disc or DVD, into the PS2 system. Press the ̶0;X̶1; button to make the cleaning disc play. The product should take less than five minutes to clean the PS2 optical lens.
