How to a Fix Slim PS2

Like all electronic devices, the Sony Slimline PlayStation 2 gradually degrades over time. Should your console begin to malfunction, it either presents a screen that reads "Disc Read Error" when you attempt to play a game or not even acknowledge that there is a disc in the system. There are many possible solutions you should attempt before sending the console in for repair. Typically, your PS2 either has a dirty laser, the console is being kept in a poor environment, which causes dust build up and overheating, or the disc you are trying to play is in poor condition.

Instructions

  1. Possible Solutions

    • 1

Experiment with multiple discs. If the console only plays certain discs, then the problem is a faulty disc-not a faulty console. Inspect each disc for scratches, smudges, or fingerprints. Use a lint-free cloth and wipe the disc clean starting from the center and moving outward in a straight line. Do not wipe in a circular motion. If you get the "Disc Read Error" with all discs, then another solution may be necessary.

    • 2

Power cycle the system. Since the PS2 Slim is such a small system, it is prone to power fluctuations that have adverse effects on performance. Unplug the PS2 and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. Plug the system back in and see if the console can read the disc.

    • 3

Relocate the PS2 to an open space with a flat, hard surface. The PS2 needs at least six inches of free space around the console to ventilate properly. If the console is kept in a confined space such as a drawer or media cabinet, it will overheat and malfunction. Open disc drive. Use canned air to blow off dust and debris from the disc drive and laser, the front vents, and the rear fans. Wait for 15 minutes and attempt to play the disc again.

Turn on the PS2 and press Triangle at the system menu to run the diagnostic mode. This allows your PS2 to either reconfigure its settings, so it functions properly or find what the hardware problem is. If this does not solve your problems, contact Sony Consumer Services and to have your console serviced.
