How to Fix Playstation 2 Pictures

The Sony PlayStation 2, despite having been superseded by the PlayStation 3 in the hardware market, is nowhere close to dead. Many software publishers continue to put out games for the machine, and with the entire back catalog of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games to choose from, there's plenty of reason to use the console. But if your PlayStation 2 is displaying faulty or inconsistent pictures, the console and its wiring might need troubleshooting before you can enjoy your games again.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that all appliances connecting your PlayStation 2 to your television are receiving power and turned on. If the PlayStation 2 is connected via a VCR or video receiver, check that the appliance, as well as your PlayStation, are securely plugged into power sources and switched on. If your TV, VCR or video receiver uses an AC adapter, check that all cords are securely plugged into this adapter and that the adapter is plugged into the wall.

    • 2

Check your television to ensure it is on the correct channel for running your PlayStation 2 console. If your PlayStation 2 runs through a VCR or video receiver, check that this too is set to the correct channel. To check the channel on your TV, VCR or video receiver, turn on the PlayStation 2 and cycle through all video channels.

    • 3

Check that the disc you are trying to run is clean, free of scratches and inserted label-side up into your PlayStation 2. If you are running your PlayStation 2 in upright mode, the label should be facing away from the controller and memory card ports. If your disc needs cleaning, use a soft, lint-free cloth and wipe in straight lines from the center to outside of the disc.

    • 4

Check the operating environment of the console. The PlayStation 2 operates best in a cool, dust-free environment. If the system is placed in steamy or dusty conditions, if the machine is exposed to excessive heat from direct sunlight or other appliances, or if the fan port on the back of the console is blocked, overheating problems might lead to picture disturbances.

    • 5

Check that the PlayStation 2 is sitting securely on a flat surface. Unstable operating surfaces can cause disturbances in the disc-reading and image-processing functions of the console.

    • 6

Connect your PlayStation 2 directly to the "Video" port of your television to reduce interference from other appliances. If picture disturbances persist, try connecting to another television to check whether the problem lies with your TV or console.
