How to Troubleshoot Playstation 2

The PlayStation 2 (PS2) may be outdated, but many gamers still find it to be a dependable video game console that can bring fun and excitement into their lives. Like any electronic device used over a long period of time, a problem can develop in the mechanical or electronic components that will cause the PS2 to function erratically. You can troubleshoot the electronics and DVD drive of the PS2 first to determine whether you can repair it yourself before having to commit to the cost and time lost from taking it into a service center. Only common hardware tools will be needed.

  • Beach towel
  • Flat-edged screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Phillips jeweler's screwdriver

    • 1

    • 2

Press the "Triangle" button on the PS2 game controller. Push up on the directional pad to select "Console" from the list of choices presented on the new screen that has appeared.

    • 3

Press the "Triangle" button on the PS2 game controller.

    • 4

Push up on the directional pad to select "On" from the list of choices presented on the new screen that has appeared.

    • 5

Press the "X" button on the PS2 game controller.

    • 6

Eject the disc tray of the DVD drive. Insert a PS2 game disc into the disc tray. Wait as the diagnostic mode automatically starts up and runs.

    • 7

Write down the comments listed on the screen when the diagnostic mode has exited. Turn off the PS2.

    Troubleshooting the DVD Drive

    • 8

Remove all of the cables connected to the PS2, including the game controller. Put a beach towel down on a table. Put the PS2 face down on the towel in a horizontal position.

    • 9

Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver beneath the four plastic and two rubber feet on the bottom and dislodge them. Remove the screws underneath using the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the screws from the top and bottom edge on the bottom using the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 10

Turn the PS2 face up on the beach towel. Grab hold of the outer shell on each side and pull it up, jiggling the outer shell so that the "Power" and "Eject" buttons come out of their holds in the bottom shell. Remove the outer shell and place it next to the bottom shell on the beach towel.

    • 11

Remove the screws from around the DVD drive using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Gently remove the top plate from off the bottom of the DVD drive.

    • 12

Push the disc tray of the DVD drive outward. Blow out the DVD drive with compressed air.

    • 13

Remove the screws surrounding the square-shaped cover over the lens that has a small white circle drawn on it with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 14

Moisten a cotton swab in distilled alcohol. Wipe the glass lens that butts up against the disc tray's back on the circuit board inside of the DVD drive. Let the alcohol dry. Repeat the process with another cotton swab. Blow out the DVD drive with compressed air.

    • 15

Reassemble the DVD drive. Reattach all of the cables. Turn on the PS2. Insert a game disc into the DVD drive's disc slot to see if the DVD drive is now functioning normally. Turn off the PS2, disconnect the cables and reassemble the game console if the DVD drive is now functioning normally.

    Troubleshooting the Laser Voltage

    • 16

Open the PS2 and remove the lens cover in the same manner as done when troubleshooting the DVD drive, being sure to disconnect all of the cables first.

    • 17

Remove the screw with the arrow pointing to it that is on the shiny metal shield that is inside of the bottom shell of the PS2 with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Lift the shiny metal shield up and off the bottom shell of the PS2.

    • 18

Remove the screw with the arrow pointing to it that is on the dull metal plate with the holes in it that is to the right of where the shiny metal plate was using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Lift up on the dull metal plate and place it down beside the circuit board that is underneath.

    • 19

Position the bottom shell of the PS2 so that the amber-colored circuit board is facing you with the three screws on it (silver, black, silver) at the bottom edge.

    • 20

Turn the silver screw at the extreme right a quarter turn counter clockwise with the nonmetallic flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 21

Reattach the cables to the PS2. Turn the PS2 on. Insert a game disc into the DVD drive's disc tray. Evaluate if the game disc is now playing normally.

    • 22

Turn on the PS2, disconnect the cables and turn the screw another quarter turn counter-clockwise if the game disc continues to function erratically. Reassemble the PS2 if satisfied that the game disc is working correctly; otherwise reassemble the PS2 and bring it in to have the voltage adjusted professionally throughout the PS2.
