How to Clean & Adjust a PS2 Slim Silver Laser

The original "fat" PlayStation 2 launched with a fair amount of problems, including disc-read errors whenever you try to play a certain disc. A number of fixes were developed, including one that involves cleaning and readjusting the laser. If your PS2 Slim develops a similar problem with reading discs, the laser is much easier to clean. Unfortunately, unlike its larger counterpart, the PS2 Slim's laser is impossible to readjust (the older model could be readjusted by turning a small, white cog after disassembling the console). The only other option is to reposition the console vertically or horizontally.

Things You'll Need

Rubbing alcohol
Cotton swabs
Compressed air

Instructions

  Power off your PlayStation 2 Slim and disconnect it from its power supply so you don't risk getting shocked or having the console switch on while you're cleaning the lens.

  Open the disc tray lid.

  Spray the inside of the disc tray with compressed air to push out any excess dust from the console. Be sure not to spray too close or too forcefully--this could damage the laser.

  Dab some rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab. Only use a small amount. Too much can cause damage to your console.

  Rub the laser gently with the alcohol-covered cotton swab in a circular motion for roughly 10 seconds. Then dry the alcohol using the other side of the cotton swab, rubbing gently in a circular motion for another 10 seconds.

  Spray the disc tray one more time using compressed air to clear out any remaining dust.
