Basics
The PS2 controller consists of 16 buttons throughout the interface. There are four directional pads, two analogs, four shoulder buttons, four face buttons, select button, and start button. All of these buttons control the aspect of the Playstation 2 gaming experience. Different games use different controls to cater to the games style. The controllers come with a wire that leads to a plug. The plug is inserted into the controller port in the PS2. There are two controller ports, with the possibility of six more using a multi-tap accessory.
Buttons Non-Responsive
After using a controller for a long period of time, the buttons may become sticky or unresponsive. This is frustrating because the controller is activating buttons your not pressing or just won't work at all. To solve this issue, use rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab to clean the dust and particles off of the controller. Make sure to clean under the analog sticks where large amounts of dust collect. Clean around the face buttons where they become sticky. After cleaning the controller, it will work fine again. Repeat the steps if the same problem occurs.
Ghost Controller
A ghost controller is when the PS2 controller is plugged in and hitting buttons without you pressing any. This can be caused by a dirty controller port. Clean the PS2 controller port with rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs. Clean the whole area around the port until there is no dust left. Now plug in the controller again. If the problem still persists, untangle knots in the wires and push in the wire where it connects to the controller.
Red Light On, but Not Working
The PS2 controllers red light will come on when you plug it into the Playstation 2. Sometimes the red light will come on but, the controller will not work at all. The reason for this is the game your playing probably does not support the type of controller your using. Check the back side of the games box to see the requirements for controllers. Normally only older models of controllers will have this problem because the newer versions will be backwards compatible.
PS2 Controller Won't Work on PS3
The PS2 controller will not work on a Playstation 3. Sony clearly wants consumers to spend more money on PS3 controllers--but also, the PS2 controllers do not have six-axis capability. Six-axis is the motion sensors in the controller that are used in PS3 games. Also there are no PS2 controller ports on a PS3. The only way your going to be playing a PS3 is with PS3 controllers. Likewise, PS3 controllers will not work on PS2.
