How to Take Apart a PS2 Controller

Taking apart the Playstation 2's (PS2) controller will let you see how the controller works. You may also want to take it apartment to fix or replace a vital internal component. Some newer electronic devices have security screws, but the PS2 controller does not, although the Phillips screws used to hold it together are very small (an eyeglass repair screwdriver will probably work best). Pay attention to how everything is placed within the controller so you can put it back together.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the PS2 controller from the console. Position it face down on a flat workspace.

    • 2

Remove the small Phillips screws from the rear of the controller. There are two in the center of the unit, as well as one in each corner. Keep these screws in a small container for safe keeping.

    • 3

Lift the rear cover from the controller. With the screws out, the cover comes off easily. Set the cover to the side to expose the circuit board and buttons.

    • 4

Remove the two Phillips screws from the bottom of the circuit board (near the analog sticks) and pull off the L and R trigger buttons.

    • 5

Lift the circuit board out of the controller. Be very careful; it's attached to the analog sticks; do not let them hang by the wires. Peel the rubber button sensors away from the button side of the circuit board.
