IR Reader
The PlayStation 2 game console offers DVD playback. Because of this, Sony released a remote control peripheral that works using the PS2 Slim's IR reader built into the console. The original PS2 lacks this port but the remote can be used with access to an external IR reader.
Disc Tray
The PlayStation 2 Slim's disc tray pops open, while the console's works via a spring mechanism. The original console's tray only works when the console is plugged in, running on gears and a motor.
Ethernet Port
The PlayStation 2 Slim has a built-in Ethernet port. The original console lacks this port but does offer support for a separate add-on.
HDD Support
The PS2 Slim lacks support for the PS2 HDD (meaning PS2 Slim owners can't play Final Fantasy XI on their console). The PS2 HDD only works on the original model.
Weight
With less size comes less weight. The PS2 Slim weighs less than two pounds, while the original PS2 weighs roughly five pounds.
