How to Troubleshoot a PS2 That Won't Read DVD Roms

The Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) has the ability to play DVD movies. However, every once-in-a-while you may experience some playback issues where the PS2 won't read the DVD you inserted into the player. This can be due to a variety of different reasons, including the DVD player or DVD being dirty, or perhaps the PS2 doesn't support the DVD you inserted into the tray.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Open the tray to the Sony PlayStation 2 and remove the DVD in the tray. Spray compressed air into the system. This removes dust and debris that can stick to the laser and lens of the gaming system.

    • 2

Inspect the DVD. If it's dirty, spray some window cleaner onto the disk and clean the DVD with a clean cloth. Rub the DVD from the inside ring of the DVD to the outside. Moving around the DVD in a circular motion can actually push the dirt the DVD and cause further problems.

    • 3

Insert the DVD back into the PlayStation 2 and see if it reads the disk.

    • 4

Eject the DVD if the PS2 still doesn't read it disk. The PlayStation 2 doesn't support all self-burned DVDs (meaning you burned the disk at home). This can vary depending on the Sony PlayStation model and the DVD brand.
