How to Repair PS2 Discs

Although newer consoles have gradually overtaken the video gaming scene, there are countless devotees of the PlayStation 2 who remain. PS2 games are often just as fun and addictive as their modern counterparts, yet a lot less expensive. However, as the games age, the discs become prone to damage. Whether it's in the form of dreaded scratches or simply the accumulation of gunk and grime, game discs can get ruined. Either way, there are steps you can take to clean and repair your PS2 games.

Things You'll Need

  • Soft, non-abrasive cloth, such as an eyeglasses cloth
  • White toothpaste that contains baking soda
  • Mild liquid soap
  • Rubbing alcohol

Instructions

  1. Clean Your PlayStation 2 Disc

    • 1

Run some warm water over your PS2 disc to remove any dust. It may be that the game disc is simply too dirty to run correctly.

    • 2

Use mild liquid soap to remove any caked-on dirt. After the disc is wet, apply the soap and use your fingers or a soft cloth to clean it. Make sure you clean from the center hole out toward the edge of the disc. Repeat, using multiple strokes, if you have to clean the entire disc. Do not go around the disc in a circular motion.

    • 3

Use a small amount of rubbing alcohol in order to remove any sticky spots on the disc. Once again, run warm water over the disc and use a cloth or your fingers to gently clean the sticky area. Work from the center hole out (See Ref. 1 for all cleaning steps).

    Fix Your PlayStation 2 Disc

    • 4

Run some warm water over your PS2 disc.

    • 5

Place a small dollop of your toothpaste onto the soft, non-abrasive cloth.

    • 6

Rub the cloth over the scratched portion of the disc. It is important that you do not go around the disc in a circular motion. Again, you must work from the center of the disc, straight out. Continue using these outward strokes to cover the scratches and the area surrounding them. If the entire disc is scratched, use these outward strokes for the whole area from the center hole to the outside edge. Approximately 10 to 15 strokes should suffice (See Ref. 2), using light pressure.

    • 7

Rinse the disc with warm water and let it air dry.
