Mortal Kombat Games for PS2

From 1998 until 2002, the "Mortal Kombat" series of video games stayed out of the spotlight of fighting games. It had previously been one of the most popular fighting game series of all time, competing with "Street Fighter," "Tekken" and "Soul Calibur." In 2002, "Mortal Kombat" made the transition from 2-D to 3-D when it made its debut on the PlayStation 2 console.
  1. Deadly Alliance

    • "Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance" features a roster of 21 characters, 10 of them unlockable. This game allows characters to move in 3-D space by sidestepping into the foreground or into the background. Each character has three fighting styles available to them: two hand-to-hand styles and one weapon style. You switch between them at will with the "L1" button--all characters have at least one combo that utilizes all three styles.

According to GameFAQs, "Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance" to date remains the only game in the series not to feature the main character Liu Kang in the roster; in the opening cutscene, the villains Shang Tsung and Quan Chi kill him.

    Deception

    • "Mortal Kombat: Deception" has more characters and several new game play modes, such as Kombat Chess, a fusion of chess and the classic "Mortal Kombat" style of fighting. Midway, maker of "Mortal Kombat," increased environmental interaction in "Mortal Kombat: Deception." By maneuvering your opponent to certain areas in a stage, you can either take the fight to a different part of the stage or end the round immediately with a stage fatality, in which your opponent meets a gruesome end via deathtraps. "Mortal Kombat: Deception" introduces Konquest, an adventure mode in which you travel through the realms as Shujinko to gather the artifacts necessary to defeat the Dragon King Onaga.

    Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks

    • "Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks" departs from the typical fighting game approach. The game's plot takes place between the original "Mortal Kombat" and "Mortal Kombat II." It plays like a 3-D action game, allowing you to move your character through a stage. According to GameFAQs, you can play through the main storyline as either Liu Kang or Kung Lao, but can unlock Scorpion and Sub-Zero later. Other characters playable in Versus mode include Kitana, Baraka and Johnny Cage.

    Mortal Kombat: Armageddon

    • "Mortal Kombat: Armageddon" ends the PS2 series of games. Every character that has ever appeared in a "Mortal Kombat" game as a fighter or a cameo character appears in this game; all 63 fighters show on the character select screen. Because of the number of characters, the game removes one fighting style, allowing one weapon style and one hand-to-hand style. You can also perform aerial combos.

"Mortal Kombat: Armageddon" has a character creation option. After creating a player profile, you can customize a male or female character's appearance, weapons and fighting styles. In addition, you can give created characters a victory phrase and biography for use in online play.
