How to Play Japanese Games on an American PS2

One of the simplest and more affordable methods of playing Japanese games on your PlayStation 2 is to use a "swap disc." A swap disc, such as Swap Magic, will trick your PlayStation and allow it to play discs from any region. This includes imported games, game backups and DVDs.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Tape (duct, masking or scotch)
  • Tissue
  • Swap Magic

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your PlayStation 2 and remove any disc inside, then turn it off. Unplug the PS2 from its power source.

    • 2

Place the PS2 on its side. Use a screwdriver to remove the six screws that hold the casing together. Gently pull the casing off.

    • 3

Locate a small gray cap near the top right of the back of the motherboard. Cover the cap with tape.

    • 4

Reattach the case. Open the disc tray. Roll up a small piece of tissue and insert it into the small hole that the disc tray latches onto. Open and close the disc tray a few times to push the tissue down.

    • 5

Plug the PS2 back in and turn it on.

    • 6

Look at the game you want to play; it will read "DVD-Rom" or "CD-Rom." Insert the corresponding Swap Magic disc.

    • 7

Use the slide tool when requested on screen. Insert the game when requested.
