How to Clean the Laser Gear of a PS2 Slim

The PlayStation 2 is a multimedia, disc-based game console capable of playing CDs, DVDs, and original PlayStation games along with the expansive library of PS2 games on the market. Over time, your console may experience trouble reading discs, leading to skipping and freezing, even if the disc is new, clean, and free of wear or scratches. The PlayStation 2 slim console makes lens cleaning easier than on the "fat" models of the PS2 console. The process requires a bit of preparation, but only takes about ten minutes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Power off your PlayStation 2 console and unplug it to avoid accidentally shocking yourself.

    • 2

Clear away any dust or hair obstructing the lens. Gently spray the area with compressed air to clear excess dust, but never spray the lens directly.

    • 3

Dampen a cotton swab slightly with rubbing alcohol. Actual lens cleaner and lens cleaning cloths work just as well. Don't dampen it too much.

    • 4

Rub the lens very gently in a circular motion for ten seconds with the cotton swab. Then use the dry end and repeat for ten more seconds without the alcohol to clear away any dampness and smudging.

    • 5

Spray the compressed air a few more times if necessary to clear away any dust or grime left in the laser gear.
