How to Install a Mod Chip for a Slim PS2

As of 2010, the PS2 is still very popular among gamers, but it is no longer being updated by Sony. This has led PS2 owners to modify (or ̶0;mod̶1;) their game consoles so that they can use programs and software created by individuals who are not sanctioned by Sony. A ̶0;mod̶1; chip can be purchased from an electronic specialty store and installed on a PS2 by the user, although this will void the warranty. Installing the mod chip requires electronic knowledge and skill with a soldering iron.

  • Utility knife
  • Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver
  • Soldering iron

Instructions

  1. Opening the PS2 Slim

    • 1

Disconnect all cables from the PS2 Slim. Put a towel down on a table. Put the PS2 Slim face down on the towel.

    • 2

Use the utility knife to remove the four screw covers from the bottom of the PS2 Slim. Remove the screws now revealed using the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

    • 3

Carefully lift off the bottom plate, starting from the left side. Put the bottom plate aside.

    • 4

Use the utility knife to remove the fan assembly inside of the PS2 Slim by releasing the catches on the left and right side. Pull the fan assembly up and carefully place it down alongside the PS2 Slim so that the wire connected to it is not pulled out.

    • 5

Use the utility knife to release the catches from around the baffled metal heat sink in front of the fan assembly's position (near the top of the PS2 Slim). Remove the heat sink and put it aside.

    • 6

Remove the screws from around the PS2 Slim's circuit board using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull up on the circuit board and carefully remove it from the PS2 Slim's case. Put the circuit board down on the towel with the right side facing you so that the metal panel of the circuit board is at the right side.

    Installing the Mod Chip

    • 7

Apply a dab of solder to each of the contacts at the edge of the mod chip using the soldering iron. Cut nine 4-inch lengths of electric wire using the wire cutters. Strip the insulation off of both ends of the wires using the wire strippers.

    • 8

Locate the large rectangular computer chip on the circuit board that is near the serial sticker and the printed "Caution" text. Locate the ninth contact at the bottom of the chip closest to the sticker by counting from the extreme right bottom corner of the chip. Solder one end of the electric wire to the ninth contact. Solder one end of another electric wire to the eighth contact. Repeat this until all the contacts have been soldered with one end of an electric wire.

    • 9

Hold the Mod chip so that the small chip on it is at the upper right corner. Place the Mod chip in the empty space on the circuit board that is above the large text that begins with "GH." Apply thermal paste around the Mod chip to hold it in position. Let the thermal paste set.

    • 10

Solder the other end of the ninth wire to the uppermost contact on the left side of the Mod chip. Solder the other end of the eighth wire to the next uppermost contact on the left side of the Mod chip. Repeat this process for the seventh, sixth and fifth wires. Let the solder cool.

    • 11

Solder the other ends of the fourth, third, second and first wires to the bottom of the Mod chip, starting at the extreme left bottom contact. Let the solder cool.

    • 12

Put the circuit board back into the PS2 Slim's case and screw it down. Replace the heat sink and the fan assembly, and reattach all of the cables.
