Gran Turismo 4
Gran Turismo 4 is designed primarily for gamers seeking a racing enthusiast's experience, but the game also provides enough arcade action to keep nearly any gamer transfixed. The title upped the ante for customizing in a racing game, allowing players to purchase and upgrade any aspect of a car that they can in real life; these changes are then reflected in the car's performance out on the track. The game features over 700 cars and millions of potential combinations of parts.
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition
This Rockstar release--makers of the notorious Grand Theft Auto series--took a lesson from Gran Turismo in forming the third edition of their Midnight Club franchise. Unlike the first two Midnight Club games, DUB Edition lets gamers use the money they earn racing their cars on the streets on San Diego, Atlanta and Detroit to upgrade their rigs, moving up in the game's Career mode from a lowly street tough to the world's racing elite.
Burnout 3: Takedown
Branded as one of the most cinematic video games ever released on the PS2, Electronic Arts' Burnout 3: Takedown is the most arcade-like racer of the bunch. Far adrift from games focused on gritty realism, Takedown eschews the standards of most racers; you'll drive at hundreds of miles per hour through city streets and suburbs against up to seven opponents. Takedown is loved by destructive personalities for its offbeat reward system based on the gruesomeness of your crashes.
