How to Copy PS2 Games Without a Modchip

A modchip is a small bit of hardware that can be attached to a Sony PlayStation 2--provided you know your way around a soldering iron, that is--that will allow the console to play all manner of imported and copied PS2 games. The modchip itself is difficult to install, and if done incorrectly can destroy your entire system. For this reason, it is highly inadvisable to use one unless you know exactly what you are doing. Fortunately, however, simply copying a PS2 game requires no modchip. All one needs is a computer. And this guide, of course.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with DVD-R/RW drive
  • IMGburn (Download link available in the "Resources" section)
  • PS2 game disk
  • 5 gigabytes of free hard drive space
  • Blank DVD+R

Instructions

  1. Making the Copy

    • 1

      Turn on your computer.

    • 2

If you have not already done so, download and install IMGburn from imgburn.com/index.php?act=download.

    • 3

      Run IMGburn.

    • 4

Insert the game disk into your DVD drive.

    • 5

Select "Create image file from disc."

    • 6

Make sure the destination is where you want to save the game copy on your hard drive, then click the "Start" button.

    • 7

IMGburn will now start burning a copy of the PS2 game onto your hard drive. This file can be written to blank DVDs, or played on your computer via a PS2 Emulator.

Transferring the copy to a disk

    • 8

Once IMGburn has finished copying the game disk to your hard drive, go to the menus and select "Mode." Select "Write" from the drop-down menu.

    • 9

In the "Source" section, click the "Browse for a file" button and find the disk image you created in section 1. Select it and press "Open."

    • 10

Remove the PS2 game disk from your DVD drive and insert a blank DVD.

    • 11

Press the "Write" button. IMGburn will now burn the ISO file onto a DVD, creating a backup of your PS2 game.
