The Best Arcade Style Games for the PS2

The PlayStation 2 was a remarkable system. With hundreds of games produced during its life, chances there are still a number of great titles out there that you never got around to playing. While the system may have been known for its high-profile action and RPG hits, such as Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy, there was still plenty of fun to be had for the more casual gamer. Here are a few of the best pick-up and play arcade hits ever produced for the PS2.
  1. Twisted Metal: Black

    • The pinnacle of the car combat sub-genre, Twisted Metal: Black reunites old characters, like the unforgettable Sweet Tooth, for a rampaging romp that is still a blast to play today. Power-ups, kooky characters, excellent controls and huge environments blend into one of the best arcade-style combat games ever developed.

    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

    • If you like your sports games realistic, look elsewhere. Tony Hawk is all about arcadey controls, unlimited combos and plenty of fun. Awesome music, great graphics and in-depth character creation means that the game is already a blast before you've even begun to shred pavement. The huge environments, numerous goals and tricky-to-master combo system makes for an arcade style game with plenty of meat on its bones.

    Tekken 5

    • Released simultaneously on the PS3 and PS2, Tekken 5 demonstrated that the older system still had plenty of fight left in it. Frantic fighting with a bevy of classic characters from the series' rich past makes for one of the best 3D fighters of all time. Perfect for button-mashers and combo freaks alike, Tekken 5 is a fighting game experience unrivaled outside of the arcade.

    Burnout 3: Takedown

    • If you're looking for realism, stick with Gran Turismo. However, if speed is what you seek, Burnout is the only choice. Burnout 3 combined incredible cheek-flapping, eye-watering speed with some of best controls and coolest crashes of any racing game ever made.
