How to Repair a PS2

Open the PS2

  Put the clean towel down on a work surface. Remove the power supply and audio and video cables from the PS2 console. Put the PS2 console face down on the clean cloth.

  Remove the rubber feet and the square tabs on the bottom of the console using the flat-head screwdriver. Put the rubber feet and the square tabs aside.

  Remove all the exposed screws with the Phillips screwdriver. Put the screws aside.

  Take the bottom cover of the PS2 console off and place it aside.

  Turn the PS2 console back right side up on the clean towel. Slide the front cover up from the back toward the front and put it down on the clean cloth next to the bottom chassis.

Clean and Adjust the DVD Drive

  Locate the DVD drive and remove the black lid after removing the four screws with a jeweler's screwdriver. Take off the black lid and place it and the screws aside.

  Blow out the inside of the PS2 console with compressed air. Wipe the edges of the exposed case with the lint free cloth.

  Press the "Eject" button on the front cover of the PS2 console. Blow off the disk tray using the compressed air. Put on the white glove and carefully pick away any dust and hair from around the now exposed laser lens.

  Mark the position of the small gear where it touches the sliver plate that lies behind the lens with a black marker.

  Turn the gear a little bit clockwise using your fingers in the white glove. Continue turning the gear until it reaches the top of the shaft it is on and drops back to the bottom. Slowly rotate the gear until it lines up with the mark made on the silver plate with the black marker.

  Bring the two sections of the opened PS2 carefully over to the TV.

  Carefully plug in the PS2 power cord and also the video connector that is coming from the television. Turn on the TV

  Plug one controller into the PS2. Put a PS2 video game disk into the disk tray. Place the black lid back onto the DVD drive and hold it down firmly but lightly with your hand.

  Press the power button to turn on the PS2 and spin the PS2 video game disk in the disk tray.

  Press the "X" button after the "Splash Screen" appears on the TV. Wait as the browser window appears and tells you the disk is being read. Continue holding the black lid down until the screen reads that the disk has been read successfully.

  Turn off the PS2 and remove the PS2 video game disk from the tray. Remove the power cord and the video cable from the PS2. Take the two sections of the PS2 console back over to the work area and put it down on the clean cloth.

  Reverse the disassembly process and put the PS2 back together. Reattach the power plug and the audio and video cables.
