Strategy Guide for God of War

Released in 2005, "God of War" is a PlayStation 2 video game following the story of Kratos, a former captain of the Spartan army. Rich in Greek mythology and antiquity references, "God of War" requires some basic strategy in order for the player to be successful. Often rated as one of the best PS2 games of all time by IGN and the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, "God of War" is also rated as one of the hardest.
  1. Combos

    • The combat system in "God of War" allows for long and powerful combos. If you do not utilize these combos, combat will seem clunky and difficult. The most powerful moves that can be used for combos are those that knock enemies down, such as Plumes of Prometheus and Ascension. These are not strictly the most physically damaging moves, but stunning the enemy by knocking him down allows Kratos to execute more combos in a larger chain attack.

Juggling moves are also very useful. As the name implies, these moves keep enemies airborne after Kratos has knocked them into the air. Moves such as Poseidon's Rage are helpful while juggling enemies.

Combos are not only important for high damage; they also reward more red experience orbs to the player. This allows Kratos to improve the strength of his attacks. Executing combos is central to "God of War"'s gameplay.

    Rolling

    • Solid offense is important to defeating enemies, but solid defense is essential to surviving. "God of War" does not provide players with nearly as complex a system for evasion as for attacking. The right analog stick controls rolling. Enemy attacks can interrupt combos, so it is important to know when to roll out of the way. Whenever you see an enemy about to strike, tap the right analog stick in the direction that has the fewest enemies. You will be able to continue attacking without sustaining damage or becoming stunned.

    Orbs

    • There are three types of orbs in "God of War": health orbs, magic orbs and experience orbs. Minotaurs provide health orbs and Gorgons provide magic orbs. The most important by far are the red experience orbs. These provide you with the experience necessary to upgrade your weapons. The more orbs you collect, the stronger you will be able to make Kratos earlier in the game. Properly upgrading Kratos' statistics and moves provides variation in gameplay. Kratos can be leveled as a combat-centric character, or he can become more adept in magic. This all depends on the player's style.

    Weapons

    • There are two main weapons in "God of War." Kratos begins with the Blades of Chaos. These will be his default weapons throughout a majority of the game. Using red orbs to upgrade the Blades of Chaos increased their attack power and gives Kratos access to a larger move set. If you do not wish to use magic, the Blades of Chaos can also use ranged attacks.

The Blade of Artemis is the second weapon that Kratos will be able to equip. This sword is stronger than the Blades of Chaos, but sacrifices speed and long range attack. Overall, the Blade of Artemis is far less versatile, and many players prefer to use the upgraded Blades of Chaos.
