Prepare Console
In order to reach the PlayStation 2's laser eye, you will first need to remove all the unnecessary components of the PlayStation 2. You can start by unplugging everything, from the power to the controllers and the AV cables. Also, make sure that no peripherals, such as memory cards or multi-taps are plugged in. Next, lay the Playstation 2 flat on the ground, and remove the four soft square shaped pads on the bottom of the console, using a screwdriver. Repeat this process to the 4 hard pads beneath. Then remove the two hard pads next to the vents on the side. Finally, remove the tape on the back of the PlayStation 2. Your warranty is now void, but you can proceed with the cleaning.
Expose the Game Drive
Remove the top cover of the PlayStation 2 console by lifting it gently from the base of the console. Be sure not to tamper with the silver foil directly under the hood. Find the cover of the game drive of the PlayStation 2 and gently lift it out. The cover should lift out easily, but if you experience some resistance, you can use a flathead screwdriver to pry it loose.
Clean the Laser Eye
Once the game drive cover has been lifted, the laser eye should be exposed. Use a lint free cloth to clear surrounding dust, and then clean the laser eye using a small cleaning brush (or a toothbrush). Be careful to remove all dust before cleaning the actual laser eye, as the act of cleaning the laser eye could stir up dust and damage the console.
Put the Console Back Together
Once the laser eye has been cleaned to your satisfaction, replace the drive cover, followed by the console cover. You may then re-attach the soft and hard rectangles that you removed from the bottom and sides of the console. Once all the components have been replaced, your PlayStation 2 should be ready for use again.
