How to Boot a PS1 Disk on an Unmodded PS2

Gamers who own a PlayStation 2 can still get use out of their library of games for the original system. The PlayStation 2 features backwards compatibility for PS1 games, though this is only true on unmodified PS2 consoles. PS1 games will even run smoother and faster thanks to the newer technology present in the PS2 console. The only downside is that not all games and accessories are compatible.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a PS1 Memory Card into your PlayStation 2 and power the system on. Do not have your PlayStation game inserted into the console yet.

    • 2

Press "Triangle" on the main menu and select the option labeled "Version Information." Scroll down until you see "PlayStation Driver" and press "Triangle" again.

    • 3

Highlight the "Texture Mapping" option and press "X." Select if you want the textures of your PS1 game to be smooth or standard. Smooth will create the illusion of a higher-res game, while standard retains all the pixelated textures present in PS1 games.

    • 4

Highlight "Disc Speed" and press "X." Choose the option for "Fast" and press "X." This will shorted load times in your PS1 games, although the effect can be minimal.

    • 5

Press "Circle" to return to the main menu. Open your disc tray and insert your PS1 game. Close the disc tray and wait for the PlayStation 2 to begin the game.

    • 6

Control the game using a PS2 controller. However if you are playing a game that does not support analog control, you will need to press the "Analog" button on the center of your PS2 controller until the red light shuts off.

    • 7

Connect a multitap made for the PS1 if you wish to play your PS1 game with more than two players. The PS2 multitap is not compatible with games from the first PlayStation console.
