How to Connect an Old TV to a PS2

The Sony PlayStation 2 gaming system uses three RCA-type audio/video cables to operate with a television, plus an electric cord with an AC transformer for power. Older television sets that are not equipped with standard plug-and-play audio/video jacks can still be used with a PlayStation by connecting a device known as an RF (radio frequency) modulator, which is available at electronics stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Television with threaded RF coaxial jack

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a coaxial cable to the RF jack in back of the TV. Do not bend or break the rigid wire inside the cable plug. Tighten the connection by turning the threaded ring on the plug.

    • 2

Connect the other end of the coaxial cable to the threaded jack on the RF modulator.

    • 3

Connect a set of RCA-type audio/video cables to the RF modulator. Follow the color codes by connecting the white audio plug to the left audio channel on the RF modulator, the red plug to the right channel and the yellow plug to the video jack.

    • 4

Connect the other ends of the audio/video cables to the back of the PlayStation 2 following the same color codes.

    • 5

Plug the power cord into the PlayStation 2. Plug the transformer on the other end of the cord into a surge protector power strip. You can also plug the television power cord into the surge protector.

    • 6

Plug the surge protector into the wall.
