How to Chip a PS2

The PlayStation 2 (PS2), like most Sony products, comes with regional encoding. This means that your PlayStation can only play DVDs and CDs that were produced for sale in the region you purchased your PS2 (e.g. Japan, U.K., North America). There are many products available that will allow you to play out-of-region discs, as well as un-encoded products (beta or copies). Installing many of these can be done without any special tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the DVD slot of the PS2.

    • 2

Align the Mod 70000 to the open DVD tray. (The 70000 hinge should be facing the inside of the PS2.)

    • 3

Gently push the 70000 onto the DVD tray until you hear a small clicking sound as it snaps into place. This device provides the additional reflector you will need to read dual-layered compact discs and DVDs.

    • 4

Remove the two blue attachment clips if using an older PS2 7 series. Ignore this step if you have a PS2 8, 9 or Slimline. You can determine the series generation by checking your owners manual or the UPC sticker underneath the PlayStation.

    • 5

      Open the 70000 Mod device.

    • 6

Place the Swap Magic CD into the 70000 Mod device.

    • 7

Close the DVD slot. The Swap Magic CD will now load automatically.

    • 8

Insert the 8 megabyte memory card into memory slot 1. This card stores the new firmware and will be used whenever you wish to launch an out of region or copied disc.

    • 9

Click the X button four times during prompts to install Swap Magic CD software to the memory card. This will install a new firmware for your PS2 to operate with.
