Hardware Requirements
To use the PS2 network adapter, you must have an original model PlayStation 2 console. The network adapter will not work with the updated Slimline model of the console, since the Slimline already has a built-in Ethernet port. You also need either a dial-up or broadband Internet connection, as well as a phone cord or Ethernet cable, respectively. If you wish to download software updates or additional game content, you must also install the PS2 internal hard disk drive.
Installation
Locate the expansion bay cover on the rear of the PlayStation 2. Remove the cover by pressing the cover's indentation with your finger and lifting it from the console. Insert the network adapter into the expansion bay. Gently connect the network adapter's console connector to the expansion bus connector in the expansion bay. Turn the network adapter's screws clockwise with a coin to secure the adapter to the PS2, making sure not to secure the screws too tightly.
Internet Connection
Insert a telephone cord into the port labeled "Line" or an Ethernet cable into the port labeled "Network." Connect the other end of the cord or cable to a phone line or router, depending on your Internet setup. Insert a memory card into the PS2 and turn the system on. Insert the network access disc that came with your adapter. Follow the onscreen instructions to configure the adapter and save your settings to your memory card.
Games
To use the network adapter, you must have a game that is compatible with network play. Additionally, the game's online component must still be functional, as many PS2 network games have had their online servers terminated in recent years. Consult a list of PS2 network games to see if your game's server is still operational (see Resources), and consult the game's instruction manual for information on its online functions.
HDD
The PS2 internal hard disk drive, or HDD, gives users additional storage space, as well as the ability to download game content. The HDD connects to the network adapter's data connector and is inserted into the PS2 expansion bay. Games such as "SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs" allow gamers to download additional maps for multiplayer gaming. The popular "Final Fantasy XI" online RPG requires users to install the HDD before playing. The HDD can only be installed on original-model PS2s, since Slimline models do not have an expansion bay.
