How to Troubleshoot a PS2 Wireless Controller

There are several complaints about the Playstation Wireless controllers, but many of the issues are relatively easy to fix. But you must properly identify what the problem is with your controller in order to repair it.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean rag/dish towel
  • Light amount of dish soap (1 tsp per 1 gallon of water)
  • Toothpick
  • Philips screw driver

If the remote is simply not responding, check to make sure the remote is fully charged. Let it sit and charge without using it for at least 1 hour before trying to use it again. Also, keep in mind that for certain Playstation Games, there are "controller options" to designate a character (or team) to a controller. Verify these settings within your game.

Be sure that the remote is plugged into the correct port on the PS2 unit. If you are "Player 1," make sure the controller's wireless adapter is plugged into "Player 1's" port. Also check that the analog button (The "P" button) in the middle of the controller is pressed. Try toggling this button On/Off to see if either mode helps reset the controller.

If the remote has buttons that "stick" or simply don't respond when you push them, you may have something stuck (food or dirt) in the crevices of the remote. Make sure that the PS2 unit is in the "Off" position and the remote is disconnected from the unit. Wipe down the entire remote with a clean rag. If the remote is sticky or dirty, lightly wet the rag with a mild soap and water (the rag should not be dripping wet, just lightly damp). Wipe down the entire remote, making sure to get in between the buttons and the plastic of the remote. If necessary, use a toothpick to get in between the tight areas. Turn the remote over and unscrew the back panel. You will see the PCB board exposed; remove this board by unscrewing it. Set the board aside, and take a look at the exposed buttons and their connectivity wires inside.

Clean each button and part of the remote (except for the PCB Board) with the soapy water solution and rag. Once all parts have been cleaned and wiped down, make sure every part is completely dry. Put the pieces and connectivity wires back in place and screw the PCB board back into place. Screw on the back of the remote.

Turn the remote on again, and check its responsiveness. If the remote is still unresponsive, check with the PS2 user guide and for any warranty information you have for your remote.
