How to Play PS 1 Games on a PS2

Since the release of the PlayStation 2, Sony has built each console to include the ability to play games from the previous generations. The PS2 can run PlayStation 1 games while the PS3 can run both PS1 and PS2 games. When deciding to use the PS2 to play a game from the original console, there are a few limitations with the console such as which games are compatible and peripheral support. Understanding these limitations will ensure your PS2 will run PlayStation games without fault.

Determine if you have an original model PS2 or a newer, slim model. The original models are larger and were manufactured prior to 2004 and feature the model number SCPH-30001. The slim models are roughly the size of a DVD case, feature the model number SCPH-75001, and are still in production as of 2009. Each of these models features additional games that experience problems with compatibility.

The original model PS2 will freeze during game play of the following games:

      Legend of Dragoon
      Lunar Silver Star Story
      Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete
      Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions
      Final Fantasy Tactics

The Slim model PS2 cannot effectively play the following:

102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue
      Akuji: The Heartless
      Barbie: Race and Ride
      Broken Helix
      Bubsy 3D
      Driver
      The Hive
      Hooters: Road Trip
      In Cold Blood
      Jampack Vol. 2
Land Before Time: Great Valley Racing Adventure
      NFL Xtreme
      NHL 2000
      NHL 2001
      NHL Blades of Steel 2000
      NHL Rock the Rink
      One (video game)
      PO'ed
      Powerboat Racing (VR Sports)
      Rascal
      Rush Down
      Sentient
      Speed Punks
      Summoner

Insert your compatible game into the PS2 as well as a PS1 memory card. PS1 games cannot be saved onto a PS2 memory card. Make sure you have one inserted into the first slot of the PS2 before starting a game.

    • 4

Use either a PlayStation controller or a PS2 controller. PS1 games can be played with either controller so you don't need to purchase an additional PS1 controller for your game.

    • 5

Purchase any peripherals or accessories required to play the PS1 game. Releases on the original PlayStation that require additional items such as a light-gun or multi-tap can only be played with PS1 versions of these accessories.

    • 6

Improve the loading speed and graphics of the PlayStation game you wish to play by going to the main menu on the PS2, selecting "System Configuration" and then "PlayStation Driver." Here you can smooth out textures as well as increase the speed at which games will load.
