Playing the Game
Shrek 2 is a dungeon crawler that is reminiscent of games such as X-Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Players take control of a four-member party, one character of which the player controls directly while the computer controls the remaining three. Each member of your party has strengths and weaknesses, so it is best to switch between party members during fights to discover which member has the most effective moves against the enemy. The Big Bad Wolf is a strong fighter while Puss in Boots is fast enough to weave in and out of battles.
The Enemies
Shrek and his friends will face several different types of enemies before they reach the end of their journey. While some, such as snails and rats, are defeated with one or two hits, other enemies are tougher to knock out. Turtles must be flipped onto their backs before attacks will do any damage, and bats can only be escaped by slowing down time and racing past them.
Watch out for the Fairy Godmother who can cast spells and bring to life stone warriors, some of the most difficult enemies to defeat in the game. When fighting these warriors, attack quickly and then retreat as they ready their ax swings.
Collecting Items
As you venture through the fairytale levels of the game, your party will come across several different types of items. Collecting these items is key to keeping your party alive as well as unlocking additional bonuses at the end of the game. The following are item types to keep watch for:
Potion Bottles replenish different stats based on the color of the liquid within. Purple potions will give your party half their health back while pink potions fully revive characters and replenish health. Blue potions give the party a temporary defense boost while orange boosts attack power. Grab any green potions, which will turn the enemies into easily defeated frogs.
Find the seven snapshots located in each level to unlock additional bonus levels. These are in hard-to-spot locations, so explore every area. Collecting twelve magic beans in each level will net you one of the snapshots.
Gold coins are the currency in the game, so collect every coin you find and spend them on upgrades for your heroes.
Upgrading Shrek and the Gang
Visit Crazy Larry's Leprechaun Shop to purchase upgrades for your party members. Any time you come across the shop, spend your coins to enhance your party's abilities. The key is to spread the upgrades across all members of your party. Choosing to only focus on one character will leave the others at a disadvantage when you reach the latter levels of the game. Gain extra coins during bonus games or by venturing through levels multiple times. Also, spread the upgrades across offense and defense skills. Increase health as well as attack power.
