How to defeat Dead Cell in Metal Gear Solid 2

This contains possible spoilers to Metal Gear Solid 2. Dead Cell is the main terrorist group in Metal Gear Solid 2. It is comprised of Solidus, Fatman, Fortune, and Vamp. Each battle is quite different from the other and this will give you some tips on how to defeat them.

  1. Fortune

    • 1

      The first thing you'll notice about fortune is that she has a fairly low amount of health. The second thing you notice is that no matter how many times you shoot her, you won't hit her. Don't bother wasting any ammo on her.

      The main goal to beating Fortune is to stay alive. To do this, avoid the electric bolts she fires from her weapon. You will have plenty to hide behind, but remember that everything is destructible, and you will eventually run out of objects to block her shots. She will also shoot up at the ceiling and knock down debris from there, so keep a sharp eye.

      After several minutes, you will receive a codec call from the Colonel. This signals the end of the fight, and it will skip to a cut scene from there.

    Fatman

    • 4

      Fighting Fatman will take some time. He runs around the helicopter port on his roller blades and randomly sets C4 explosives in multiple areas. The weapons you will want to keep handy are your pistol, your coolant and claymore mines. On your item side, keep either your sensor A or rations equipped.

      Fatman will begin to place bombs at random places of the heliport. Keep a close eye on his movements and use your sensor A to help you find the location of the bombs. When you see a bomb, use the coolant to deactivate each one. When he sets the last one, he starts a timer. If this runs out, the heliport explodes and it's game over. The harder the difficulty the less time you will have to deactivate all bombs. Look very hard in certain locations because he can easily plant a C4 in a spot that may be difficult to see at first. For example he may place a bomb by a large crate, bu it could be underneath it instead of on its side. After the timer starts, he will try to attack you with his gun.

      After the C4's are disarmed, he may say it's time fro a break. This is your chance to attack him. To cause damage, knock him to the ground by shooting at him several times. As he tries to get up, get in front of him, aim your gun at his head and fire.

      Claymores can be very useful against Fatman, as they will stop him from planting C4 and knock him over at the same time. Find spots where Fatman runs through frequently and place a Claymore mine there. One good place is in the center spot between two crates.

      After his energy runs out, Fatman plants another final C4 before dying. The easy part is that this C4 is right under him and all you have to do is pick him up and move him away from it. Deactivate the C4 and you're done.

    Harrier

      The battle with the Harrier II can be quite a feat to overcome, especially on the hardest modes. You will start the battle off with a Stinger Missile Launcher that Pliskin will throw down. To do well on this battle, you will need to make use of your surroundings and know your way around the upper and lower platforms. Snake will also throw down items for you every once in a while. You will also need to keep an eye on your radar for the location of the Harrier.

      The Harrier has two primary modes of attack: machine gun and missiles. The machine gun will be the least of your worries. You can dodge this easily by hiding behind the walls and crates and the bullets will be blocked. The Harrier moves around as it fires, so adjust yourself accordingly by staying behind some cover.

      The missile attacks are going to be you biggest challenge, and there are three ways you will be attacked with missiles. The first method is firing at you from long distance. As the jet flies out into the distance, head to the top platform, place yourself in front of one of the railings, and equip your Stinger. Aim your stinger at the Harrier, though it won't lock on until it gets into range. As you lock on and fire, the Harrier will fire its missile. Immediately unequip the Stinger, place yourself against the railing and hit the Action button (triangle) to flip over the ledge. If you time it right, the missiles will miss you completely. This might take one or two tries before you get it right, as you have to be very quick to pull it off.

      You will know when the second type of missile attack will come up when the Harrier flies right below your platform. The jet will then immediately fly right in front of the top platform and start shooting a barrage of missiles at you. Quickly run from the missiles by running across the platform. When he is done firing, equip your Stinger and try to get a shot off quickly before it flies away.

      The third type of attack is by far the strongest and hardest to dodge. The Harrier will fly away for a moment, then the camera will briefly cut away and show the Harrier. Solidus will yell loudly as he fires a large amount of missiles at the platform, which you will have less than three seconds to dodge. This attack will hit you wherever you are on the platform, so staying in one place will damage you. The way to avoid this attack is to take cover on the lower platform, and if you're already at the top, use the Action button to flip over the railing as the missiles fall down.

      The times to attack the Harrier are during the brief periods where the jet doesn't attack you. Use your Stinger to lock-on to the Harrier to get an almost guaranteed hit. Just prepare to be attacked when Solidus yells or taunts you.

    Vamp

      At the start of this battle, Vamp will bow towards you. Return the courtesy by plugging him with your gun. You'll notice to wounds on Vamp from the Fortune battle: one by his stomach and one on his forehead. It's very hard to hit these two spots, but if you do, then it will cause twice the damage. You will know when you've hit him there because he will grown loudly in pain.

      After that, he will swim in the water and start his pattern of attacks. The first consists of him jumping onto and walking across the top platform. When he stops, he will throw several knives at you and then one more after that. He'll then jump to another side and repeat the same thing. Then he will jump a third time and spin across while throwing knives at you. During these attacks, you can fire at him with your M4, AKS-74u, SOCOM, or grenade launcher when he's not throwing knives.

      His second attack involves jumping on the platform and running straight for you. Hit him with the grenade launcher to stop him cold. You can also avoid this attack by setting Claymore mines or C4 while he is underwater.

      Vamp last and worst attack is when he briefly freezes you by attacking your shadow. You can't fire or move in this state, and unless you have Claymores set by you, it's likely he will run up and attack you. To prevent this attack, you can take out the lights in the room so that you don't cast a shadow.

      Another way to attack Vamp while he's on the railing is to use one of your automatic weapons to shoot at the knives to knock them down, then fire at him. This is very difficult but useful for when you run out of ammo for the grenade launcher.

      You will fight Vamp again when he takes Emma hostage. All you need to do to defeat him is to use your sniper rifle, use diazepam and don't hit Emma. It shouldn't take too long to take him out. Just do it before Emma's health runs out.

    Solidus

      The only way to defeat Solidus is with the sword. Make sure you know how to use it before going into battle. Attacking him consists of dodging his attacks, then striking him. He will swing his swords or try and kick you down. Don't forget to use the block button (L1) to block his sword attacks.

      Solidus's tentacles have two attacks: they will try to grab you and choke you or they will shoot missiles at you. If you get caught by the tentacles, press all the buttons quickly to escape. To avoid the missiles, run away from them, but also run at an angle towards Solidus. This will allow to get close to Solidus and attack him. If he jumps into the air, move away from him because he will come down with a large slash. You can attack him after he's back on the ground.

      After Solidus's health reaches halfway, he will throw off his tentacles and come at you full force. He will streak one to three times across the roof, pause for a second and then come after you. Each time he streaks across, he leaves a trail of fire behind him. If you catch fire, roll on the ground to put it out.

      Avoid his charges by running or cartwheeling out of the way, then attack him. Continue this process until you defeat him. Remember that there is one ration in the corner of the roof for you to take.
