Deck Leaders
Players choose the deck leader for their ̶0;Yu-Gi-Oh!̶1; monster team prior to each match. The deck leader assumes the primary attack position on the gaming area, and you lose the match if an opponent defeats your leader. Other monsters enter the field of battle to support the leader or attack the opposing forces. Surrounding an enemy̵7;s deck leader allows you to prevent her from summoning additional forces until you defeat the leader or it breaks free.
Gaining XP
All creature cards on the field of play gain XP, a hidden attribute representing the combat experience of the monster, for each turn it remains on the battlefield. The game awards additional XP when a monster defeats an opposing creature, shares the field with other monsters sharing the same name or survives until the end of the battle. Increases in XP provide rank increases. Creatures typically begin play at a rank of Second Lieutenant and progress through the ranks until they attain Secretary of Defense.
Acquiring Leader Abilities
Creatures with a rank of First Lieutenant or above may acquire leader abilities. The creature̵7;s type dictates which abilities appear for the monster, and some well-known creatures may have additional leader abilities beyond those conferred by type. Abilities appear as the creature progresses through the rank. The game automatically assigns leader abilities when you choose a monster with the correct rank and type as deck leader.
Losing XP, Rank and Abilities
XP and rank may change quickly throughout the course of play. Monsters gain XP through a variety of methods, but may lose XP as well. A substantial loss of XP results in the loss of ranks, though a monster of First Lieutenant rank or higher may never drop below First Lieutenant. XP loss occurs whenever an opponent overcomes your monster through combat or the use of trap cards and spells. Monsters lose additional XP when discarded from your hand, as well. Leader abilities may disappear after a match if the deck leader̵7;s current XP level drops their rank below the level required for the leader ability.
