Checking the Disc
If a specific PS2 game disc is continually freezing up on you, take it out of the console and flip it over. The bottom part that doesn̵7;t have any writing on it is the part that your PS2̵7;s lasers read so you can play the game. Like CDs, DVDs and other types of discs, PS2 games should be clean and as free of scratches as possible. If your disc looks smudged or dirty, use a disc cleaning kit to clean it according to the kit̵7;s instructions. Let the disc dry completely before you try using it again in your PS2; moisture and electronics don̵7;t mix.
Checking Your PS2
Another possibility is that the laser that reads games in your PS2 is dirty. The PS2 has been around since the year 2000, so it̵7;s reasonable to think that it might need a little internal cleaning. Try opening the lid on your PS2 and blowing gently on the little gap you see in the black plastic. This is where the laser sits and reads your disc. If the game works after you̵7;ve blown into the console, the laser was probably dirty. Cleaning the laser should solve your freezing problem.
Considerations
Sometimes game discs become so badly scratched that your PS2 can̵7;t read them. Try contacting local game stores in your area to see if they offer game disc repair. As a last resort, you can always purchase another copy of the same game that̵7;s in better condition than your original copy. Since the PS2 isn̵7;t a new machine anymore, it̵7;s also possible that the system has problems that aren̵7;t as easy as cleaning the laser. If that̵7;s the case, many video game stores also offer console repair. You can also contact Sony PlayStation customer support to find an authorized repair facility in your area.
Warning
If you know what you̵7;re doing, taking apart your PS2 is probably not a daunting task. However, if you̵7;re inexperienced or uncomfortable with taking your PS2 apart, it̵7;s possible that you could further damage the machine. Be aware of the risks you̵7;re taking if you decide to take the machine apart yourself. If you̵7;re not ready to contact a professional repair person, consider contacting a gamer friend who̵7;s experienced with and likes taking apart game consoles.
