Final Fantasy Ten Dragon Boss Tips

Creature bosses in the PlayStation 2 game "Final Fantasy Ten" are side quests providing a large amount of experience points, or AP, as well as rare items. The dragon boss Fafnir is one such creature boss. Unlocking him gives you 99 Purifying Salts, which can be used to customize weapon abilities.
  1. Monster Arena

    • The dragon boss Fafnir is an enemy character that can be fought in the Monster Arena, which is east of the Calm Lands in the "Final Fantasy Ten" world. When you travel there for the first time, you can purchase special weapons from the Monster Arena Keeper that will help you unlock creatures to fight in the Monster Arena. The special bosses available in the Monster Arena are some of the toughest in "Final Fantasy Ten," but losing a battle doesn't cause you to lose the game like it would outside of the Monster Arena.

    Unlocking Fafnir

    • To unlock the dragon boss Fafnir in the Monster Arena, you need to capture a number of dragon creatures appearing around the "Final Fantasy Ten" world. A total of 20 dragon creatures must be captured by defeating them with the capturing weapons purchased at the Monster Arena. The five different dragon species that exist in "Final Fantasy Ten" are Vouivre, found on the Mi'ihen Highroad; Kusariqqu, found on the Thunder Plains; Lamashtu, found on the Mushroom Rock Road; Mushussu, found on the Sanubia Desert; and Nidhogg, found on either Mt. Gagazet or the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth. You must capture four of each species to unlock Fafnir, not just any combination of 20.

    Haste

    • Fafnir's high HP count of about 1,100,000 means that he will require a number of turns to defeat, even if your party characters can reach the 99,999 damage limit. Increase the number of turns you can take by casting either Haste or Hastega on your characters. Haste decreases the amount of time between turns for one character; Hastega decreases the amount of time between turns for the entire party. Haste is a white magic spell first earned by Tidus, but it can be learned by other characters later in the game. You can also increase the number of turns your characters take by attacking with Quick Hit.

    Elemental Protection

    • Fafnir's most powerful attack is the Triple Attack, a move that attacks one character through melee and then injures the entire party with an elemental attack and finishes with another melee attack. The elemental phase of the attack deals either Fire, Blizzard or Thunder elemental damage. Use Yuna to cast elemental nullification spells, such as NulBlaze or NulFrost, to protect your party from elemental damage. The nullification spell remains intact until Fafnir deals elemental damage blocked by the spell. Cast Protect as well as other defensive spells, and carry plenty of Phoenix Downs to revive downed party members.
