How to Play PS1 Backups on an Unmodded PS2

If you're itching to play backup copies of all your favorite PlayStation games, you'll be pleased to learn you can easily play them on a PlayStation 2. Even if your PS2 is not equipped with a mod chip, the console can run burned copies of PS1 classics, provided you carry out the necessary steps. Before you know it, you'll be enjoying backup copies of iconic PS1 games that haven't seen any action in ages.

Things You'll Need

  • PlayStation 2 console
  • PlayStation 2 Swap Magic kit
  • Burned PS1 game
  • Small Phillips-head screwdriver

Instructions

Remove the front cover from the console's disc drive. Eject your disc drive, power down the console, then use a small Phillips-head screwdriver to carefully remove the screw that holds it in place. Next, use a miniature flat-head screwdriver or paperclip to push down on the two clips that hold the cover steady. When sufficient pressure is put on them, the clips will automatically detach themselves. When powering down the console, use the on/off switch located on the back of the PlayStation 2. If you turn the machine off using the power button in the front, the disc drive will automatically go back inside the console.

Hold the disc drive's shaft in place. With the front cover gone, the drive's shaft is a bit wobbly. To ensure it stays nice and steady, use your Phillips-head screwdriver to insert a screw in the now-vacant hole on the bottom-left side of the disc tray.

Open the disc tray, and insert the "CD Boot" disc that came with your Swap Magic kit. Once the disc has loaded, use the Swap Magic Slide Card tool to latch onto a small white button that is visible in the absence of the disc tray's front cover. After you've gotten a hold of the button, carefully move the Slide Card tool all the way to the right. The disc drive will eject, even though the console will be fooled into thinking the drive is still closed.

Remove the "CD Boot" disc, and insert the burned PS1 game of your choosing. Latch onto the small white button with the Slide Card tool once again, then move the tool all the way to the left to close the disc drive. Within a few moments, your copied game will begin to load.
