I Can't Get the PS2 Optical Digital Out Working

The PlayStation 2 has an optical output that uses light to transmit digital audio to an amplifier in a home theater setup. Dust or other contaminants can interfere with the light traveling through the optical cable and cause the audio to no longer be heard. You can fix the PS2's optical audio output by removing the contaminants. Household tools and supplies from a hardware store are needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Compressed air
  • Soft cloth
  • Electrical cleaning spray
  • Cotton swab

Instructions

Unplug the optical audio cable from the PS2's optical digital output. Rub the end of the cable's plug with a soft cloth. Blow off the optical digital output with a burst of compressed air.

    • 2

Insert an end of the tube that comes with the electrical cleaning spray into the can's nozzle. Shake the can for 4 seconds. Spray a 1/2 second burst at the end of the cable. Wipe the end of the cable with the soft cloth.

    • 3

Spray the end of a cotton swab with the electrical cleaning spray for 1 second. Wipe around the edges of the optical digital output with the moistened end of the swab. Wipe around the inside edges of the optical digital output with the moistened end of the swab. Dispose of the swab in the trash.

Line up the tab on the plug at the end of the optical audio cable with the depression on the optical digital output. Insert the plug at the end of the optical audio cable into the optical digital output. Remove the plug and reinsert it into the output.

Turn the PS2 on. Look into the end of the optical audio cable to confirm there is a red light, which indicates the optical digital output is functioning correctly.
