How to Troubleshoot the PS2 Start-up Screen

The PlayStation 2 game console relies on a number of connections that can affect the transfer of video from the graphic display card to the television set. To troubleshoot why the PS2's start-up screen is not seen on the TV, check the viability of the cables connected to the console. This procedure requires supplies that you can get at a hardware store.

Press the power switch on the PS2's console to the "Off" position. Unplug the PS2 controller's connector from the socket on the front of the console. Blow any dust off the connector with a burst of compressed air. Insert the connector into the other controller socket on the front of the PS2. Turn on the PS2 and wait for the start-up screen to appear before using the controller.

Turn the PlayStation 2's power switch off. Rotate the console so that you can see the back. Pull the video cable out of the socket on the back panel. Blow any dust off the socket with a burst of compressed air. Shake the can of electrical cleaning spray for five seconds, then spray a one-second burst on the end of the video cable. Line up the cable's plug with the socket. Insert the plug in the socket. Rotate the console so the front is facing you again. Turn on the PS2's power switch.

Turn the PS2's power switch to the "On" position. Wait 20 seconds. Locate the reset button at the front edge of the PS2. Press against the reset button with the eraser of a pencil. Hold the reset button in until the LED light on the front turns red. Continue holding the eraser against the reset button until the LED goes out. Remove the pencil and wait for the PS2 reset itself. Do nothing until the start-up screen appears and is replaced by the main menu.
