How to Troubleshoot a PS2 Remote

The PlayStation 2 system gets a lot of attention as a video game console but it also doubles as a DVD player. While you can use the Dual Shock 2 controller to control DVD playback, the optional DVD remote control allows you to operate your PS2 as you would any other DVD player or TV. Like all electronics and accessories, the DVD remote may not function like you expect it to. This doesn't mean it is broken, however. A few troubleshooting tactics allow you to eliminate simple errors.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace the batteries in the DVD remote with a fresh pair or with batteries you are sure work. The PS2 remote uses AAA batteries. Press the "Power" button on the remote to see if the PS2 console responds.

    • 2

Move closer to the PS2 console when pressing a button on the remote. This eliminates any possibility of the remote's IR beam being too far away. The further away from the console the remote is, the weaker the signal.

    • 3

Ensure no objects are placed between the remote and the receiver on the PS2. The IR receiver is directly beneath the "Reset" button on the console. Point the remote directly at the console when pressing buttons.

    • 4

Press one button at a time. Mashing several buttons at one time makes the remote functions inoperable.

    • 5

Move the PS2 out of direct sunlight. The sun's rays overload the IR receiver, making the remote ineffectual.

    • 6

Contact the remote's manufacturer if troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. If the remote was purchased within a year, you may be entitled to a replacement.
