How to Mod Your PS2 for the First Time

Modding your PlayStation 2 allows you to run imported and backed-up games. Luckily, there's an easy way to mod your PlayStation 2 without installing a chip, which is tricky and frequently leads to broken consoles. All you need are a few common household tools. Be aware that you will need a copy of SwapMagic to run burned games in your PlayStation 2 after you complete the modding process.

Things You'll Need

  • Standard Philips head screwdriver
  • Small Philips head screwdriver
  • Small blade head screwdriver
  • Pocket knife
  • Electrical tape
  • Plastic sandwich bag

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug all cables, controllers and memory cards from your PS2.

    • 2

Pry away the plates that cover the screws on the bottom of the PS2 using the blade screwdriver.

    • 3

Unscrew all screws on the PS2. Place all the covers and screws into the plastic bag.

    • 4

Cut through the tape that holds the case together with the pocket knife. Note that this will void any warranty through Sony.

    • 5

Separate the top and bottom of the case.

    • 6

Remove the white sticker holding the silver ribbon cable to the top of the CD/DVD drive.

    • 7

Unscrew the four small screws on top of the CD/DVD drive with a small Phillips head screwdriver. Place the screws in the plastic bag.

    • 8

Place the cover of the CD/DVD drive back on the PS2 properly. Put the top half of the case back in place.

    • 9

Put a 4-inch piece of electric tape on the bottom of the case, folding it over the back of the PS2. Put another piece of electrical tape on the other side of the PS2.

    • 10

Stick a long piece of electrical tape under the CD/DVD drive and above the USB connecter ports. This allows the top and bottom of the case to swing open when the tape on the back of the PS2 is folded down.
