What Do You Need to Get a Mod for the PS2?

PS2 owners have multiple methods available to them to modify their gaming system. They can choose between several different chips for a hard-mod or opt for a soft-mod instead. A modified PS2 gives users more playback features than the standard PS2. For example, after a mod, users can play imported PS2 games that would not otherwise run on their system. Modifying a PS2 is legal in the United States; however, pirating games is not.
  1. Swap Magic for Soft-Mod

    • Swap Magic is a disc that allows users to play foreign imports, backup copies of games and other digital media on a DVD-R or CD-R. Swap Magic is necessary to soft-mod a PS2 successfully. It is legal in the United States under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

PS2 Flip Top Cover or Magic Switch for Soft-Mod

    • In addition to Swap Magic, a PS2 owner looking to soft-mod his system will need either PS2 Flip Top Cover or Magic Switch to complete the soft-mod package. Either of these tools allows users to play foreign imports or back-up copies of their games without opening the PS2 system, thus keeping the warranty intact.

    Memor32

    • An alternative soft-mod to Swap Magic is Memor32, a memory card that saves PS2 game files. This memory card connects to the PS2 and PC via USB cable. Via installing a BIOS released by Memonto, the Memor32 functions as a mod-chip without the need to open the PS2.

    Mod-Chip for Hard-Mod

    • If you decide to hard-mod your PS2, you will require a mod-chip. There are many different mod-chips available for PS2; some popular ones include DMS3 and Magic3.1 No Swap. Note that opening the PS2 voids the warranty and you will need soldering equipment or access to a computer repair shop that will solder the mod-chip in the PS2.
