How to Mod a PS2

The PlayStation 2 is a video game console introduced to the gaming community by Sony Entertainment in 2000. This console has 2,015 game titles available to be played. The console has two case designs, one being the original and one being the slim line which is the more recent design. The PS2 can play music Cd's, DVDs and is backwards compatible to play PlayStation 1 games as well. The console also features USB and IEEE 1394 expansion ports and wired or wireless dual shock controllers.

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Mod chip
  • Soldering iron and solder (optional)

      Some mod chopis can snap in to place on the motherboard.

      Research and choose the best mod chip for your gaming needs. Some mod chips require being soldered to the mother board while other are solder free.

      Failure to remove power cables could result in shock or additional injury.

      Remove all power and connector cables from the console. Turn the console upside down and place it on a flat surface. Remove any peripherals such as memory cards as well.

      There are both flathead and philips head screws to be removed.

      Use the screwdrivers to remove the holding screws, so that the case can be removed from the console and reveal the inside components. Remove the screws holding the metal shield and component casing.

      Each mod chip performs a different mod for your console.

      Lift the metal shield off of the motherboard, there are no screws holding this plate in place. Once this plate is removed you have access to the motherboard and can install your mod chip.

      PlayStation 2 mods can be for the console or for specific games.

      Install the mod chip according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pay close attention to see if it requires soldering or can snap into place. Then, reassemble your console by following the steps in reverse.
