How to Mod PS2 With a Modchip

The PS2 still remains a very popular video game system. Modding the console is one thing that a lot of game enthusiasts like to do to their systems. Installing a modchip allows the system to play backup copies of games and imported games not traditionally supported by the console. Be careful when installing your modchip, as opening the system voids the warranty and it is full of easily breakable pieces.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a clean surface that is large enough to hold your PS2 and all of the parts when disassembled.

    • 2

Flip the console on its back and remove the pads covering the screws that hold the system together. Remove the screws after the pads are out of the way.

    • 3

Return the PS2 to its original position and gently slide the top off of the bottom piece and set it to the side.

    • 4

Remove the screw above the controller ports and remove the "Reset" switch by disconnecting the ribbon cable.

    • 5

Gently pry the motherboard off of the base of the system by lifting with a screwdriver from the back corner. Be very careful not to damage anything and take as much time as needed to prevent breaking pieces.

    • 6

Flip the motherboard over and unscrew the four screws attaching it to the metal base. Do not take off the metal base yet or you will damage the PS2.

Remove the backup battery unit that powers the BIOs, as well as disconnecting the DVD drive by removing the screws.

Lift the DVD drive out of the system and disconnect the laser wire first, followed by the ribbon holding the drive to the motherboard.

    • 9

Solder your modchip to the motherboard in the location specified by the modchip's manual. There are many different chips on the market, so it is important you use the location specified for your chip.

Let the solder cool down and reverse the process to get your PlayStation 2 put back together.
